Doctor, my eyes cannot see the sky.
Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry?
- Jackson Browne
In the introduction to his new book, Emotional
Healing at Warp Speed: The Power of EMDR, Dr. David Grand tells the story
of his personal discovery of EMDR, opening his eyes to a whole new world. Throughout
this energetic book, the reader shares his story, the shaping of a true adventurer
in the field, reaching into new areas of emotional healing and well-being.
Dr. David Grand celebrates creativity. He combines the courage to step outside
of the conventional, while maintaining a strong allegiance to the EMDR model and
Francine Shapiros principles. I have enjoyed following his rise in
the field over the past few years, participating in his lively and well-attended
workshops here in London, and using his BioLateral CDs with much success.
Most of all, I admire his sincere approach to the puzzles of life. Wherever possible,
he depathologises and enlightens the human condition. His is a supremely optimistic
book.
With over twenty years of sound clinical practice, Dr. Grand reports that he finally
arrived with his discovery of EMDR eight years ago. He enthusiastically
invites the reader to share and extend the discoveries that have transformed and
continue to shape the second half of his life so dramatically. The author clarifies
the application of EMDR for trauma, while extending its use into areas of
personal growth, including performance and creativity enhancement.
The book is divided into four main sections, beginning with an account of his
introduction to EMDR after becoming an established therapist, and ending with
the personal positive vision he has of the contributions that EMDR therapists
can make to society. The middle chapters offer a fine variety of practical
points on healing trauma and on improving performance, and are replete with illustrative
case examples.
The fluency of Dr. Grands writing style, which clearly influences his therapeutic
approach, highlights ease with self-disclosure and the significance of weaving
together a congruent world-view for personal and professional living. His expressiveness
draws the reader into a personal alliance and enthusiastic exchange. Such a wide
window into the authors psyche brings the material to life, inviting readers/therapists
to stretch the self-imposed limits on their work.
In his book, Dr. Grand breaks ground most in the areas of performance enhancement
in both athletics and in the arts (e.g., acting). He emphasises the importance
of body-mind communication, the release of creative energy through the resolution
of trauma, and the ultimate goal of reaching of ones personal best.
Dr. Grand also encourages self-use of EMDR for the therapist, commenting that
his performance improved by listening to his own bilateral CDs throughout
the writing of this book. I must admit, I have mimicked this practice whilst writing
this article!
Tales of his voluntary involvement with EMDRs Humanitarian Assistance Programs
illustrates the importance that Dr. Grand places on social action and responsibility.
He describes his valuable experiences serving in the troubled areas of Northern
Ireland, Israel and Palestine, and inner cities. It is invigorating to be
reminded of the potential power of generosity, and the important role that this
quality plays in the world of EMDR.
Other EMDR fundamentals, or powers, that form the foundation of Dr.
Grands book include solid belief in the persons ability to self-heal,
and deep respect for the uniqueness of each clients life therapy.
Fortunately, many fine books are now being published on EMDR. As EMDR matures,
therapists are challenging the original protocol in responsible ways, while still
adhering to the basic principles of EMDR. Dr. Grands work remains
a very special participant in this natural trend to expand and diversify. His
trail-blazing effort to use EMDR in everyday life, and for improving performance
and creativity, opens many new doors. Dr. Grand provides a smooth and lively read,
and I find myself wanting more.
